Have you had solar panels on your roof for a few years and you’re still watching your evening electricity bill creep up despite all that free daytime sunshine? You’re probably one of many who are asking themself: Can I add a battery to my existing solar system?

The short answer is yes, absolutely – in almost every case. And for a huge number of Queensland households right now, it’s a genuinely smart time to do it.

Adding battery to existing solar system setups is actually one of the most common jobs we do – and it doesn’t mean ripping anything out or starting from scratch.

But what is involved? Are you even eligible?

Let’s dive in:

Why so many people are adding a battery right now

Solar-only systems have always had one frustrating limitation – your panels generate the most power in the middle of the day. And that’s exactly when most households are out at work or school and using the least electricity.

And that excess gets exported to the grid for a feed-in tariff that’s shrunk considerably over the years, then you buy it back at full price once everyone’s home in the evening, cooking dinner and running the air conditioning. Pretty darn frustrating, we know.

But a battery closes that gap, storing your own cheap daytime solar and releasing it back into your home overnight instead of paying retail rates for grid power.

And as the price of everything just continues to soar, now is a great time to be looking into improving your situation. The federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program now offers a rebate worth around $252 per usable kWh, applied directly by your retailer or installer as an upfront discount on the invoice rather than something you need to claim separately. For a typical 10kWh battery, that works out to well over $3,000 off the upfront cost, which has shifted household solar batteries from a nice-to-have into something with a genuinely fast payback period for a lot of homes.

Backup power is another big draw

Cost savings aren’t the only reason households are adding storage.

Queensland’s storm season regularly brings outages – and sometimes they last hours. And a solar-only system without a battery still goes dark the moment the grid does, even with panels sitting right there on the roof. So that’s a common misconception worth clearing up early – solar panels alone don’t keep your lights on during a blackout, since safety switches automatically disconnect the system from the grid to protect utility workers.

A battery, though, changes that completely. With the right setup, your home can continue to draw on stored power during an outage, keeping the fridge, the lights, and your internet running while the rest of the street waits it out.

What needs to be true before you add a battery

Before you can add a solar battery to existing system setups, there are a handful of things worth checking on first:

1. Your inverter needs to be compatible

If your existing solar inverter is on the Clean Energy Council’s approved list, adding a battery is usually straightforward.

But if it’s older or has since been delisted, you may need a hybrid inverter upgrade alongside the battery, which your installer will flag during the initial assessment.

2. Your system needs to be permanent & compliant

The rebate only applies to permanent installations that meet current state and Queensland electrical safety regulations – so portable or temporary setups don’t qualify.

3. Sizing matters more than people expect

A battery that’s too large for your existing solar array and inverter output won’t deliver the benefits you’re expecting, so getting the sizing right relative to your daily usage is a key part of the eligibility conversation with your installer.

4. Your installer needs proper accreditation

The installation must be carried out and supervised by someone accredited through Solar Accreditation Australia, and the products used need to be on the Clean Energy Council’s approved list.

And another thing worth putting to rest: adding a battery doesn’t void your existing solar panel warranty.

Panel manufacturers warrant the panels themselves, not what you connect to them further down the line, so as long as the solar battery installation is done properly and by an accredited electrician, your original solar warranty stays intact.

How to add a battery: Step by step

Once you know you’re eligible, adding a battery to solar system setups generally follows the same reliable process.

Step 1: Get an assessment of your existing system.

A qualified electrician checks:

  • Your current inverter
  • Your panel output
  • Your daily usage patterns.

With all of that, they’ll work out what size battery actually makes sense for your household.

Step 2: Get a few quotes.

Comparing quotes from different retailers helps you understand pricing, but also warranty terms and exactly how the rebate will be applied to your invoice.

Step 3: Confirm compliance and rebate eligibility.

Your installer checks your inverter against the CEC-approved list and confirms your system meets the technical requirements for the Cheaper Home Batteries Program discount.

Step 4: Installation day.

In most cases, adding a battery to an existing system takes less than a day.

Your accredited installer:

  • Connects the battery to your existing setup
  • Fully configures the system
  • Makes sure everything’s talking to each other correctly.

Step 5: Commissioning & sign-off.

Next up, the installer:

  • Commissions the system on-site
  • Tests everything’s working as it should
  • Provides the written compliance documentation needed for the rebate to apply.

Step 6: Start saving.

From there, your system automatically starts storing daytime solar for evening use, and most retailers include an app so you can watch it happening in real time.
