There’s never been a better time to go all-in for solar! If you haven’t heard already, the Australian Government has announced a new Federal solar battery rebate – and it’s a game changer for households and small businesses wanting to maximise their solar power use, reduce their bills, and contribute to a more stable, sustainable energy grid.
Here at Static Electrics, we know many of our customers – like you! – have been waiting patiently for a solar battery rebate that makes the investment more accessible. Well, that wait is almost over. From 1 JULY 2025, eligible Australians can access a 30% discount on new battery installations as part of the Cheaper Home Batteries Program – the most significant energy rebate program news in years.
Let’s walk you through:
- What the rebate is
- How it works
- Who’s eligible
- And why you might want to start preparing now.
What is the Cheaper Home Batteries Program?
The Cheaper Home Batteries Program is a brand new nationwide incentive designed to support the uptake of home solar battery systems. Backed by a $2.3 billion investment, the initiative aims to help Australian households store excess solar energy generated during the day, so it can be used when the sun goes down – reducing reliance on the grid and cutting down those soaring electricity bills.
The Federal government solar battery rebate will be delivered through the existing Small-Scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES), which currently supports solar panel installations via solar rebate discounts. This program is now being expanded to include home battery storage Australia wide.
What kind of discount can you expect?
- From 1 July 2025, eligible households and small businesses can receive around a 30% discount off the upfront cost of installing a solar battery system. The discount will apply to up to 50 kWh of a battery’s usable capacity.
- The exact amount will vary based on the size of your battery and the STC (Small-Scale Technology Certificate) value at the time of installation, but as of 2025, it’s expected to be around $372 per kWh. That means a 10 kWh battery could attract a discount of up to $3,720.
- It’s worth noting that this government battery rebate will decrease each year until 2030. So the sooner you install your battery (after 1 July), the more you’ll save.
How will it work?
The rebate will work similarly to the existing federal solar rebate for panels. Most customers will not need to apply directly.
Instead:
- You choose a SAA-approved battery system
- It’s installed by an accredited professional (like the team at Static Electrics!)
- We apply the solar battery subsidy at the time of purchase
- You pay the reduced price, no paperwork, no waiting.
The discount is built into the upfront cost and supported by the government through the SRES.
Who’s eligible for the rebate?
The rebate is targeted at homeowners and small businesses installing eligible systems.
Here’s what you’ll need:
- A new or existing solar PV system on your property
- A battery between 5 kWh and 100 kWh in nominal capacity
- An installation completed on or after 1 July 2025
- A system that appears on the Clean Energy Council’s approved battery list
- Installation by a technician accredited by Solar Accreditation Australia (SAA).
- If your system is on-grid, it must be VPP capable (Virtual Power Plant compatible), though you don’t need to join a VPP.
Importantly, the home battery rebate only applies to your first battery installation at a property. Additional batteries or upgrades to systems that have already claimed a rebate won’t qualify.
Why add a solar battery?
A home solar battery stores excess energy produced by your panels during the day, so you can use it at night or during peak usage times – when grid electricity is more expensive.
Benefits include:
- Lower power bills and reduced grid reliance
- Backup power during blackouts (depending on the system)
- Greater return on your solar investment
- Contributing to a more stable, greener energy grid.
And with this solar battery rebate now covering a significant portion of the cost, more homeowners can take advantage of these benefits.
What kind of battery can you install?
To qualify for the rebate, your solar batteries must meet specific safety and performance standards.
This includes being:
- Lithium-based, and compliant with AS/NZS 5139:2019
- Listed on the Clean Energy Council’s Battery Assurance Program
- Installed according to Australian best-practice safety guides.
If you’re unsure which system best suits your energy use, budget, or current setup, Static Electrics solar electricians can help you choose a home battery storage solution that’s both compliant and cost-effective.
What if you already have solar?
GOOD NEWS: if you’ve already had solar panels installed, you’re still eligible for the rebate – so long as the battery is added after 1 July 2025 and meets all the criteria.
JUST KEEP IN MIND: if your system was installed many years ago, we may need to assess whether any upgrades or changes are needed to support the new battery. Our expert team can handle that check and give you options.
What about state rebates?
While Queensland doesn’t currently offer a standalone solar battery rebate, eligible homeowners may still benefit from other support programs:
- No-interest loans or energy-efficient financing through approved lenders
- Virtual Power Plant (VPP) trials or partnerships available in select regions
- Energy efficiency incentives tied to broader sustainability upgrades.
At the time of writing, the primary home battery rebate available in Queensland will be the new federal solar battery rebate starting 1 July 2025. However, as policies continue to evolve, there may be additional offers from local councils or energy providers.
We’ll help you stay informed about all available options in Queensland – and how to combine them with federal support to maximise your savings.
When should you act?
Now’s the time to plan. While installations can’t be claimed until after 1 July 2025, demand is expected to surge once the government solar battery rebate officially begins.
